Reviews for THE UGLY DUCKLING POTTERY PAINTING, NEWBURY

Great fun had by my granddaughters. They had a hard time choosing what to paint. Instructions and plenty of colours to choose from on the table. A couple of the pots were empty, but a quick chat with a member of staff and all replenished. Grandaughters want to go back as they so enjoyed it. We did not have anything to drink or eat, and so can't comment on that. An age range of customers when we visited....I'd say age 3 to 70 plus. Would definitely recommend.

Our experience here wasn’t the best. Normally I’m not one to leave a review but I was just so appalled by how they treat their staff. The owner from what I can gather was in and hosted a disciplinary meeting for a staff member. Not only was this in ear shot of us, the customers but also other staff could hear too! The poor staff member was clearly embarrassed and it's not very professional to conduct such meeting infront of other staff. Topping it all off a week later we went to collect our pottery to discover one of our pieces was damaged from the stand while in the kiln. The lady did attempt to fix it, but just sanded it down leaving the item covered in scratches. Not impressed and the lady couldn’t have cared less seeing our dissatisfaction. She just said sorry, it happens. It’s not a particularly cheap activity so I’m quite disappointed with the whole experience.

Spent a lovely couple of hours painting a plate with my mum and daughter for my 1st Mother’s Day. Staff were very helpful especially with getting my 11 month daughters handprint on the plate. Great baby changing facilities too.

I visited with a girlfriend for the first time on Saturday (20th January). Pottery painting is very cathartic and I liked the location, the range of pottery pieces on offer to paint, the ease of getting started and the relaxed vibe. These guys would have achieved five stars from me if the floor space was clear and not so full of big boxes of unpainted pottery stock from Ohio, clutter with uncollected Customers' work, and there was a nice clear path to the bathroom. As someone with impaired balance and mobility issues it was rather unsettling to have to negotiate and almost climb over so much 'stuff'. Having a clear floor of obstacles is important for everyone to use the building safely, not just those of us who have disabilities. To be honest, it was a heck of a trip hazard at the best of times, but still great fun. Some of the paint colours had run out or dried up so I think a daily check of the brushes, paints, colour tiles, and clean seats would improve the experience ten-fold. If these elements can be rectified then it'll be a really awesome place to creatively chill and chat.

Was expecting more from the experience and was promised different timelines... I went with my baby to create a few Christmas gifts with her toeprints on and the practical side went fine (mind you, I did it all one handed, even handling a bottle at one point), however the staff could've been more proactive asking if I needed food/drink or if I needed any help given I was alone with a (sometimes crying) baby on my lap the whole time. Also, I had booked so that I could get my items back within a week as I wanted to give them to the grandparents early before travelling for Christmas and was told 10 days - had I known I would've moved my session date! So not sure I'd go again, sadly

Have visited multiple times and always had a great experience! A lovely location for a date night or activity to catch up with friends for a low cost

I discovered this gem of a place for my partner but I have become hooked! A great way to de-stress and create your own masterpieces. I am already on my next project (a cauldron) and I hope to paint a vase too. I thoroughly recommend ‘The Ugly Duckling’ for both children and adults alike!

Absolutely love this place - a wide range of pottery to choose from to paint yourself, which makes for a perfect indoor activity with friends and family. The staff explain well the process and advise when needed. The atmosphere is cosy and relaxed, which pomotes creativity. Drinks and food are an added bonus and nice to have - althought not always have time to properly enjoy if focused on painting. Done two visits/ sessions already and planning another one. Definitely highly recommend.

LOVED IT!! They have a very wide selections of things to paint. It was my first time pottery painting and I think it’s such a cute and fun activity! It’s also definitely beginners friendly! The drinks we got were all amazing, way above average! I got a an iced caramel latte and it was sooo delicious (actually tasted like caramel like I like 😋). My friend got an honeycomb milkshake and seemed really happy as well and she won’t stop talking about it, so as a general review I’d say their drinks are amazing! I’d really love to go here again next time I come visit my friend in Newbury! (After painting the pottery it takes about a week to be ready so my friend will collect it, can’t wait to see how it turned out!)

Great way to spend a few hours, especially for big kids who have some free time with child at nursery! My wife and I went on a Monday morning, so it was nice and quiet. I would recommend the hot chocolate which was delicious. The blueberry muffin and honeycomb Tiffin were equally worthy of a visit. With a dragon, a Tree shaped plate, 2 hot drinks and cakes, washed down with a smoothy, you don't get much change from £50. So, not cheap, but for 3hrs of relaxation it was worth it! Currently there is a 1 week wait until the items can be collected post-firing. Looking forward to the results...
